Anniversaries, spas, jacuzzis and truffles

This week was mine and Mary’s 4th anniversary. I had a few things planned to celebrate the event and it turned out better than I could have ever hoped for. We started with a day at a spa in Alton which is about an hour from Toronto. We had dinner at the Millcroft Inn & Spa a few years ago but the spa wasn’t ready yet so we were excited to try it out this time.

We drove up on Sunday, luckily we only had a slight dusting of snow which made for some great scenery. We stopped in at our now favourite local farm for some apple pie and other treats. We arrived hours early since use of the facilities is included and spent the day swimming, using their jacuzzi, steam room, etc.
We were then treated to some food and drinks. It was nice to lounge around all day in our spa robes. We were then scheduled for a couples massage, we waited by a crackling fire and a vista of snow-lined hills. Not a bad way to spend a day.

When we were done, the masseuse told us there was also an outdoor jacuzzi and by this time, night had fallen, and the air was cool and crisp. While it was a bit harrowing dealing with the initial cool burst of air, we were immediately soothed by the intense heat of the water and pulsating jets. The cold air was a perfect contrast to the hot temperatures.

We left pretty late and headed home, although it felt like we floated home. The fog was intense in the area but lifted after awhile. We exchanged gifts and got each other the exact same greeting card which was good for a few laughs.

On Monday, I booked a table at the Four Season’s restaurant, Truffles for the official day of our anniversary. We couldn’t get over how exquisite the meal was. The funny thing was they knew it was our anniversary and I don’t recall telling them that when I called. Mary finally found the soufflé she’s been searching for. The foie gras was amazing, from the truffle salad, to the terrine, rack of lamb, beef tenderloin, Japanese mushrooms, truffle foam, truffle chocolates, crème brulee, and Okanogan wine, all were truly spectacular. How they got the bread that thin and tasty, I’ll never know. They made a point to come over and wish us a Happy Anniversary and had specially decorated our dessert plates with similar greetings. They truly outdid themselves. Mary and I agreed this place is our new favourite, we didn’t think we’d find another one to outdo our old favourite.

We left full and content, strolled through Yorkville to work off some calories and headed home on a rainy but warm night. All in all, an amazing weekend.
